Al 3+ - Ca2+ INTERACTION IN PLANTS GROWING IN ACID SOILS: AL-PHYTOTOXICITY RESPONSE TO CALCAREOUS AMENDMENTS J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Meriño-Gergichevich,C; Alberdi,M; Ivanov,A.G; Reyes-Diaz,M.
High aluminum (Al) concentrations as Al3+ represent an important growth and yield limiting factor for crops in acid soils (pH ≤5.5). The most recognized effect of Al-toxicity in plants is observed in roots. However, damages in the upper parts (including stem, leaves and fruits) may also be present. In addition, Al-toxicity triggers an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative stress that can damage the roots and chloroplasts, decreasing normal functioning of photo synthetic parameters. Al-toxicity may also increase or inhibit antioxidant activities, which are responsible to scavenge ROS. As result of the negative effects of toxic Al, root metabolic processes, such as water and nutrient absorption, are disturbed with a...

Aluminum accumulation in two Pfaffia glomerata genotypes and its growth effects Ciência Rural
Maldaner,Joseila; Nicoloso,Fernando Teixeira; Tabaldi,Luciane Almeri; Cargnelutti,Denise; Skrebsky,Etiane Caldeira; Rauber,Renata; Gonçalves,Jamile Fabbrin; Rossato,Liana Verônica.
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a limiting factor for crop production in acid soils, which cover approximately 60% of the Brazilian territory. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Al on growth and tissue Al concentration of two Pfaffia glomerata accessions (BRA and JB/UFSM). Plantlets were grown in a hydroponic system with five Al concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200mg L-1) for 7 days. Most of the evaluated parameters presented significant interaction between both P. glomerata accessions and Al levels in nutrient solution and, in general, Al treatments negatively affected plant growth, especially roots. Moreover, BRA accession showed higher Al accumulation in its tissues than JB/UFSM and, consequently in BRA accession the growth was impaired...

Boron Leaching Decreases withIncreases on Soil pH Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Sá,Alessandra Aparecida de; Ernani,Paulo Roberto.
ABSTRACT Management of boron fertilization depends on the magnitude of B leaching in the soil profile, which varies proportionally with the concentration of B in the soil solution, which, in turn, decreases as the soil pH increases due to the higher sorption of B on soil solid surfaces. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of liming and rates of B applied to the soil on B leaching. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory in 2012, and treatments consisted of a factorial combination of two rates of liming (without and with lime to raise the soil pH to 6.0) and five rates of B (0, 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg kg-1, as boric acid). A Typic Rhodudalf was used, containing 790 g kg-1 clay and 23 g kg-1 organic matter; the pH(H2O) was 4.6....

Cátions trocáveis e controle da acidez em latossolo argiloso sob sistemas de manejo e de produção de algodão, milho e soja. Infoteca-e

Infoteca-e
SOUSA, D. M. G. de; LOBATO, E..
In order to grow soybeans in cerrado soils it is necessary a previous, reduction of soil acidity and to build up the soil fertility. It is recommended the application of limestone to raise the soil pH up to the range between 5,5 and 6,0 or to increase base saturation up to 50%. The chemical constraints for root growth in the subsurface soil layers, such as the high aluminum saturation and/or calcium defficiency, can be overcome by the addition of gypsum. The recomended levels of gypsum vary from 700 kg/ha for sandy soils to 3200 kg/ha for heavy clayey soils. Fertilizers to supply phosphorus and potassium are recommended according to their availability in the soil determined by chemical analysis. Critical levels for those nutrients as well as the...

Does nitrogen availability have greater control over the formation of tropical heath forests than water stress?A hypothesis based on nitrogen isotope ratios Acta Amazonica
Brearley,Francis Q; Fine,Paul V. A; Perreijn,Kristel.
Global scale analyses of soil and foliage δ15N have found positive relationships between δ15N and ecosystem N loss (suggesting an open N cycle) and a negative relationship between δ15N and water availability. We show here that soils and leaves from tropical heath forests are depleted in 15N relative to 'typical' forests suggesting that they have a tight N cycle and are therefore limited by N rather than by, often suggested, water availability.

Effects of Soil Aluminum on Early Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Colonization of Wheat an Barley Cultivars Growing in an Andisol Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Seguel,Alex; Medina,Jorge; Rubio,Rosa; Cornejo,Pablo; Borie,Fernando.
Aluminum phytotoxicity in acid soils is an important environmental stress that negatively affects crop production, but arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi performance would allow plants to better withstand this environmental condition. This study aimed to analyze the effect of soil Al on early AM colonization of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars. Near-isogenic Crac, Invento, and Porfiado wheat cultivars and Sebastián and Aurora barley cultivars were sown in pots in an acid soil at three Al saturation levels (60, 34, and 11%). At 20 d after sowing (DAS) 'Crac' presented higher AM colonization (27%) than other cultivars. However, 'Invento' had the fastest colonization at 41 DAS, which was inhibited in short term at lower...

Field comparison between selection methods at the maize seedling stage in relation to aluminum tolerance Scientia Agricola
Giaveno,Carlos Daniel; Miranda Filho,José Branco de.
Selection and breeding for aluminum tolerance is a useful approach to increase maize (Zea mays L.) grain yield in acid soils. The objective of this work was the comparison between two screening approaches for the development of Al tolerant maize populations. One cycle of divergent selection for aluminum tolerance, using both nutrient solution and pots with acid soil, were completed in the maize population SIKALQ. The four sub-populations selected through both selection procedures were compared with the original population and checks in field trials repeated over locations. Eight environments stratified into four groups varying from non acid to high aluminum saturation were used. Three variables were analyzed for comparisons of methodologies: grain yield,...

Genetic effects for maize traits in acid and non-acid soils Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pérez Velásquez,Juan C.; Souza Jr.,Cláudio Lopes de; Narro,Luis A.; Pandey,Shivaji; De León,Carlos.
Breeding programs for acid-soil tolerance are desirable as a relatively inexpensive and permanent way for increasing maize (Zea mays L.) yield on these soils. Our objective was to compare the genetic effects controlling the expression of maize traits in acid and non-acid soils. Seven related and one unrelated inbred lines, with different levels of tolerance to acid soil, and their F1, F2, BC1, and BC2 generations were evaluated in four acid and two non-acid soils. Estimates of additive, dominance, and epistatic effects were computed for grain yield, plant height, days to mid-silk, and prolificacy, using the generation means analysis procedure. For all traits the major part of the variation was accounted for by additive and dominance effects, with dominance...

Identification of aluminum resistant Andean common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Blair,Matthew W.; López-Marín,Hernán D.; Rao,Idupulapati M..
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the principal abiotic constraint in acid soils of the tropics. Common bean, meanwhile, is for the most part very sensitive to this stress although certain genotypes within the species show some level of resistance, justifying screening of germplasm from both the Andean and Mesoamerican genepools to identify better performing sources. The objective of this study was to evaluate 36 genotypes of common bean under hydroponic conditions to identify root morphological traits that could be associated with Al resistance. A total of five root traits (elongation rate of the primary root, total root length, root biomass, average root diameter and specific root length) were measured using a simple nutrient solution with or without Al (20 µM)...

Increase of grain and green matter of corn by liming Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ernani,P. R.; Nascimento,J. A. L.; Oliveira,L. C..
Despite the fact that aluminum toxicity to crops is eliminated near soil water pH of 5.5, lime recommendation in many regions aims to increase soil pH up to 6.0 or even higher. For highly buffered soils, high rates of limestone are required to raise the pH from 5.5 to 6.0, resulting in additional, sometimes unnecessary, costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of soil pH on corn yield in a very acid Hapludox. The experiment was carried out in Lages, Southern Brazil, from 1992 to 1996. The soil had water pH of 4.7, Al3+ of 33 mmol c kg-1, O.M. of 45 g kg-1 and lime requirement to pH 6.0 of 9.0 t ha-1. Dolomitic limestone at rates of 0, 4.5, 9.0, 13.5 and 18.0 t ha-1 (equivalent to pure CaCO3) was incorporated into the soil down to 17 cm...

Liming and fertilization to restore degraded Brachiaria decumbens pastures grown on an entisol Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Patrícia Perondi Anchão; Boaretto,Antonio Enedi; Trivelin,Paulo Cesar Ocheuze; Oliveira,Wladecir Salles de; Corsi,Moacyr.
The reconstitution of soil fertility is essential in the process of pasture restoring, liming being the first action to be taken in this direction. The liming recommendation for pastures needs more technical information as the application method and rate. A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the liming and fertilization practices to restore a degraded Brachiaria decumbens pasture. The following factors were studied: liming method (incorporated in soil by disking or not); level of base saturation (40, 50 or 80%) and lime type (55, 70 or 90 of ECC). Liming and fertilization (NPK and micronutrients) increased both the forage yield and its root system, these being more evident in the second year, even using the same rates of lime and fertilizer used...

Organic acid carriers in tolerance to toxic aluminum in wheat Ciência Rural
Silva,Gerarda Beatriz Pinto da; Zanella,Camila Martini; Delatorre,Carla Andréa; Chaves,Márcia Soares; Martinelli,José Antônio; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos.
ABSTRACT: Aluminum (Al) toxicity in plants is seen in about 15% of the soils worldwide, restraining yields in arable land. In Brazil, acidic soils limit production of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and other cereals. Al is toxic for most winter cereals when its concentration increases and soil pH is below 5. One of the main concerns with acidic soil is the increase in the mobility of Al3+ions. Al binds to cell walls in roots, preventing meristematic elongation in sensitive species, causing damage to the root system and results in lower yields. Al3+ forms highly stable complexes with phosphorus (P), limiting its availability to plants, as well as reducing cell division and elongation. To deal with Al toxicity, plants have developed strategies such as organic...

Phosphorus availability in a low pH highly weathered soil as affected by added salts Ciência Rural
Ernani,Paulo Roberto; Barber,Stanley Arthur.
Concentration and identity of cations and anions in the soil solution may affect soil P reactions and thus P availability. The magnitude of these reactions was evaluated in this research after application of various salts to a highly weathered low pH soil. Chloride, nitrate, and sulfate salts of Na, NH4, K, Ca, Mg, Sr, or Cu were added to the soil after addition of 360mg P/kg trying to simulate ion concentrations around granules of fertilizers in the soil. Thirty days later, P was determined in the soil solution (Pli) and on the solid phase (Psi). The soil samples of some treatments were leached with water and three days later a new soil solution was displaced. Separate addition of all salts increased Pli, except NaCl at the lowest rate. The increase of...

Reduction of exchangeable calcium and magnesium in soil with increasing pH BABT
Miyazawa,Mário; Pavan,Marcos A.; Ziglio,Cláudio O.; Franchini,Júlio C..
A laboratory study was conducted with soil samples and synthetic solutions to investigate possible mechanisms related with reduction in KCl exchangeable Ca and Mg with increasing pH. Increasing soil pH over 5.3 with CaCO3 added to the soil and with NaOH solution added to soil/KCl suspension increased adsorptions of Ca and Mg. The reduction of Mg was greater than Ca and was related to the concentration of soil exchangeable Al. The decreases of soluble Ca and Mg following addition of Al in synthetic solution were at pH > 7.5. The isomorphic coprecipitation reaction with Al compounds may be the most possible mechanism responsible for the decrease of exchangeable Ca and Mg with increasing pH. Possible chemical reactions are presented.

Strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) yiel das affected by the soil pH Anais da ABC (AABC)
Milosevic,Tomo M.; Milosevic,Nebojsa T.; Glisic,Ivan P..
Two-year trials (20062007) suggested that the use of calcium oxide (CaO) on acid soils increased soil pH and yields in strawberry cultivars Marmolada, Selena and Senga Sengana, under the environmental conditions of Cacak (Western Serbia). The highest yield was obtained when CaO was applied at 750 kg ha-1 rate. Further increase in rate up to 1,500 kg ha-1 did not show corresponding increase in yield; the result was a slight yield drop compared to the peak yield shown at 750 kg ha¹ rate. Overall, yields at rates above 750 kg ha¹ were still higher than control and in the treatment employing lowest CaO application rate of 250 kg ha-1.
